Société Française des Parfumeurs

The Société Française des Parfumeurs (SFP) is a French professional association founded in 1942 that brings together trained perfumers, promotes the craft of perfumery, and awards the Prix François Coty.

History and Mission

The Société Française des Parfumeurs was established in 1942 in Paris, France, during a period when French perfumery was consolidating its professional identity. Its founding mandate was to unite professional perfumers, define standards of the craft, and preserve the heritage of French perfumery. Membership is restricted to trained and practicing perfumers.

The SFP hosts regular events, conferences, and competitions. It maintains relationships with educational institutions including ISIPCA (Institut Supérieur International du Parfum, de la Cosmétique et de l'Aromatique Alimentaire) in Versailles, France, and supports professional development across the industry. It also collaborates with IFRA (International Fragrance Association) on regulatory matters.

Prix François Coty and Industry Role

The most visible public-facing activity of the SFP is the Prix François Coty, an annual award recognizing outstanding fragrance creation. The prize is named after François Coty (1874–1934), the Corsican-born entrepreneur who revolutionized the modern perfumery industry in the early twentieth century. The award is presented by a jury of SFP members.

The SFP also publishes the journal Parfums and serves as a reference body for the French fragrance profession. Its significance in niche perfumery lies in the formal professional recognition it provides: many of the most respected independent and niche perfumers are SFP members, and the association's standards for craft and ethics influence the broader professional community.
