Animal musk

Animal musk is the glandular secretion of the male musk deer. Western perfumery gave it up without its own profession ever banning it, and the register outlived the material.

Origin and provenance

Animal musk comes from a glandular pod carried by the male musk deer, a small antlerless deer of the genus Moschus. The Siberian species, Moschus moschiferus, is the one perfumery documents most. The genus lives in the high forests of the Himalaya, Siberia, northern China, Mongolia and the Korean peninsula.

The pod, which the trade calls a grain or pod, sits under the abdomen, ahead of the genitals. It weighs about twenty-five grams and exists only in the adult male. That single fact governs the whole economics of the material.

Animal musk should not be confused with the white musks, synthetic molecules that carry the same common name and now fill almost every formula. They are two different materials, the second designed to replace the first.

Olfactory profile

At full strength, animal musk is acrid, urinous, close to unbreathable. Diluted, it turns warm, powdery, faintly fecal, and above all diffusive. That double nature made its value: a material no one can bear neat and no one could replace at one percent.

Its lead molecule is muscone, a macrocycle whose structure Leopold Ruzicka established in 1926, the same year he synthesized Exaltone. The rest of the profile comes from a mixture of steroids and fatty acids that synthesis has never reproduced in full.

Its role in a formula was twofold, fixative and amplifier. It extended tenacity and gave volume to flowers without ever announcing itself.

Production and extraction

The pod is taken from the dead animal, dried, then macerated in alcohol at roughly three percent. The tincture ages for months before use.

The economics of the material explain its disappearance better than the ethics do. TRAFFIC calculates that about one hundred and sixty animals yield one kilogram of musk: twenty-five grams per gland, and only one usable male for every three to five animals trapped, since traps distinguish neither sex nor age.

Farming exists in China, where extraction is performed on the living animal, but it does not supply Western perfumery.

Regulatory status, as of 8 September 2026

CITES. The genus Moschus is listed under a split that is geographic rather than taxonomic. The populations of Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan fall under Appendix I, which closes international trade for commercial purposes. Every other population falls under Appendix II, which allows it under permit. One species therefore answers to two regimes depending on its country of origin.

European Union. The introduction into the Union of wild specimens of Moschus moschiferus originating in Russia is suspended. That suspension appears in Implementing Regulation No 828/2011. The list is reviewed periodically, the instrument in force being Implementing Regulation 2025/6 of 6 January 2025.

IFRA. No IFRA Standard covers animal musk. The index of IFRA Standards, fifty-first amendment, does not mention it. It does restrict several synthetic musks, among them musk ambrette, musk ketone and musk xylene.

What that means. Western perfumery's retreat from animal musk was not an industry ban. It was a binding CITES regime, a European import suspension and a cost that became impossible to justify, all at once. TRAFFIC already noted that use declined through the 1990s first because the material was judged too expensive.

History in perfumery

Musk reached Europe along the Asian trade routes and served medicine before it served perfumery. In the classical palette it holds the place ambergris holds for the marine and civet for animal warmth: a base, not a subject.

The turning point was chemical, not regulatory. Nitro musks appeared at the end of the nineteenth century, macrocyclics followed Ruzicka's work, crowned by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939. From the 1920s onward, synthesis offered a comparable effect at an incomparable cost, and the natural material receded.

What remains of animal musk in contemporary perfumery is therefore an idea, carried by molecules that resemble it only in part.

Notable perfumes

The register outlived the material. Musc Ravageur, composed by Maurice Roucel for Frederic Malle in 2000, put powerful musk back at the center of a modern niche composition.

Musc Tonkin, composed by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato for Parfum d'Empire in 2012, is an avowed reconstruction: the house writes the lost musk with permitted materials, and never claims to hold any.

Both entries say the same thing two ways. In contemporary perfumery, the word musk names an effect rather than a provenance.

Why this material matters in niche perfumery

Animal musk is the clearest case of a smell perfumery kept composing after losing its source. It shows that an olfactory register is not tied to a raw material but to an effect several chemistries can aim at.

It also serves as a test of rigor. Many texts state that IFRA banned natural musk, or that CITES placed it in Appendix I. Neither is accurate, and the distinction matters: it separates a legal constraint from a professional choice.
