Discovery set

A discovery set is a brand-issued sampler kit, usually four to twelve vials in 1.5 to 10 ml formats, that lets a buyer test a house's collection before committing to a full bottle. It has become a near-universal practice in niche perfumery since the early 2000s.

Definition

A discovery set, also marketed as a sampler kit or exploration set, is a brand-issued box of four to twelve sample vials a niche perfumery house puts together so a buyer can test the collection before committing to a full bottle. Common vial sizes range from 1.5 ml to 10 ml, with retail prices typically between 20 and 150 euros depending on the house and the volume offered (source: Frédéric Malle). The format is now a standard of niche distribution and often doubles as a conversion tool toward a full bottle purchase.

Origin and history

The format took hold in the early 2000s alongside online sales and the rise of specialist American retailers such as Luckyscent (Los Angeles, 2002) and MiN New York (source: Luckyscent). Frédéric Malle was among the early champions, with a kit of six 1.2 ml sprays whose cost is credited toward a subsequent full bottle (source: Frédéric Malle). The model has since spread to virtually every house in the niche segment.

Use in perfumery

The set serves a precise commercial role: low-friction sampling with a small entry ticket. Diptyque offers six 7.5 ml vials, Frédéric Malle a trio at 15 euros or a six-vial set at 75 euros, MiN New York a series at 50 euros with a matching voucher toward a 75 ml bottle (source: MiN New York). The set price is often credited against a later full bottle purchase.
