Maceration in perfumery designates the rest phase of the fragrance concentrate after formulation. The concentrate is sealed in a stainless-steel tank and left undisturbed for a period ranging from two weeks (commercial mass-market) to six months or more (premium niche). The term is borrowed from oenology and herbalism, where maceration designates equivalent maturation steps. The analogy to wine aging is used by niche houses to communicate quality positioning.

In practice

After maceration, the concentrate undergoes filtration to remove suspended particles, then cold-chilling (sub-zero temperatures for several days) to precipitate waxes and heavy fixatives. These steps produce the final transparency of the liquid. Some artisan niche houses deliberately skip cold filtration, resulting in a natural cloudiness in cold weather that they market as a sign of natural-ingredient quality.
