Mukhallat

A mukhallat (from Arabic mukhallaṭ, "blended") is a Gulf perfume composition assembled from pre-distilled attars, raw oud oil, musk, ambergris, and resins, typically alcohol-free, central to Arabic and Khaleeji perfumery.

Definition

A mukhallat (Arabic مخلط, "blended") is a perfume composition from the Gulf and the Indian subcontinent built by assembling already-distilled attars, raw oud oil, ambergris, musk, saffron, Taif rose, and sometimes resins (source: Fragrantica community, accessed June 4, 2026).

A mukhallat is distinct from an attar: an attar is a single botanical hydro-distilled into a sandalwood base, while a mukhallat is a blend of multiple already-prepared materials, with no further distillation step (source: Basenotes wiki, accessed June 4, 2026).

Composition and format

A mukhallat typically combines ouds from different terroirs (Cambodian oud, Indian oud, Vietnamese oud), at least one precious rose (Taif, Damascus), animalic or synthetic musks, ambergris, saffron, and a resinous base of frankincense or myrrh. The format is almost always oil-based and concentrated, in 3, 6, or 12 ml flacons applied by stick or fingertip. Some modern houses extend their mukhallats with alcohol for a spray format.

Pricing varies sharply with oud quality and rose source, from 5 to over 1,000 EUR per 3 ml flacon.

Houses and use

The historical references for mukhallat are the Gulf houses: Amouage (Oman, founded 1983, whose The Attars collection relaunched in 2021 draws on the mukhallat tradition), Abdul Samad Al Qurashi (Saudi Arabia, established 1932), Arabian Oud, Ajmal, and Rasasi. In the Western niche segment, Ensar Oud and Bortnikoff produce artisanal mukhallats (source: Amouage, Abdul Samad Al Qurashi, accessed June 4, 2026).

The traditional use layers the mukhallat with bakhoor, an incense burnt at home or onto clothing, building a personal olfactive signature.
