The house

Diptyque was founded in 1961 in Paris (France) by three friends: Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet and Yves Coueslant. The boutique opened on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, and initially sold a mix of fabrics, wallpapers and decorative objects before moving into candles and then fragrances.

The house launched its first eau de toilette in 1968 with L'Eau, composed by Desmond Knox-Leet, establishing a creative model based on unexpected material combinations and an anti-conventional approach to perfumery. Diptyque attracted a loyal following among architects, artists and the French intellectual milieu of the Left Bank for its understated presentation and deliberately non-commercial positioning.

On Osmetheca, Diptyque is represented by three fragrances: L'Ombre dans l'Eau (1983), signed by Serge Kalouguine, a watery rose-blackcurrant composition; Philosykos (1996), signed by Olivia Giacobetti, a fig-based composition that became a benchmark for transparent naturalistic perfumery; and Ilio (2021), signed by Olivier Pescheux, a luminous white floral centered on sea figs and solar materials.
