Quick answers
Biography and career
Frank Voelkl was born in Bonn (Germany). He spent his first years there, then lived in the Netherlands and in Paris (France). Summers on his uncle’s farm, with hay, animals and wildflowers, shaped his olfactory memory.
Paris is where he discovered perfume as a teenager. He spent weekends at a perfumery on the rue de Rivoli and played at guessing his mother’s fragrance. His first career plan was diplomacy. He chose perfumery instead and graduated from ISIPCA in Versailles.
He settled in New York (United States) in 1995. At Haarmann & Reimer, now part of Symrise, he signed his first fine fragrance: Tiaré for Chantecaille, listed in 1997. It was a tribute to his wife, who is from Tahiti. In 2002, still at Symrise, he met Fabrice Penot, the future co-founder of Le Labo.
He joined Firmenich on 17 October 2005. He names Maurice Roucel and Arturetto Landi among his mentors. His main market is the United States, with work for Europe and Latin America too.
On 2 July 2026, dsm-firmenich named him Master Perfumer alongside Marie Salamagne. Per Premium Beauty News, the group had not awarded the title in fine fragrance since 2016. CNN calls him only the sixteenth master perfumer in the company’s history, with more than 200 perfumes to his name.

Notable perfumes
Le Labo is a case apart in his work. In 2014 he told ÇaFleureBon it was “a somewhat exclusive relationship that I don’t have with anybody else to that extent.” Premium Beauty News counts close to twenty creations for the New York house.
Santal 33 began as a candle. Voelkl liked it enough to wear it, and Fabrice Penot decided to launch it as a fine fragrance in 2011, with no advertising. “To me, Santal 33 is my masterpiece on ‘perfect imperfection,’” he said.
| Year | House | Perfume | Accord |

| 2006 | Le Labo | Iris 39 | Dry woods |

The Accord column follows Michael Edwards’s Fragrances of the World classification, as published by ÇaFleureBon in 2014. For later Le Labo work, Premium Beauty News also cites Thé Noir 29, Thé Matcha 26, Baie 19 and Violette 30.
Other creations and awards
Outside Le Labo, Voelkl moves between designer brands, celebrity scents and American niche. He says he is particularly proud of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Covet (2007), a fougère for women whose sales stayed limited.
Glossier You (2017) “connected with an entirely new generation of consumers,” he told Fragroom. According to Glossier, quoted by CNN in October 2026, a bottle of You sells every 40 seconds. He also composed Tuscan Leather Intense for Tom Ford (2019), a take on Harry Frémont’s Tuscan Leather.

Olfactory signature
Voelkl compares building a perfume to sculpture: adding and removing pieces from different angles. He also thinks in colours, using shades for brightness or a mysterious darkness. He looks for contrast and a degree of abstraction.
His method embraces imperfection. On Santal 33, he says he deliberately left details unpolished, keeping facets that might seem too much but come together into something beautiful. As early as 2014, ÇaFleureBon spotted a distinctive wood accord running through many of his perfumes.
His own taste runs to smoky, leathery materials, which he slips in at “very, very small, subliminal” doses, CNN reports. Any more and people read them as fire or danger. He aims for the right level of presence: addictive for the wearer, never overwhelming for others.
CNN describes his scents as clean but not sterile, woodsy but transparent. Sandalwood, iris and ambroxan run through his Le Labo work, from Iris 39 to Santal 33.
