Quick answers
History
16A Orchard was commissioned in 2021 by Aedes de Venustas founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl to mark the relocation of their Aedes Perfumery boutique to 16A Orchard Street, on the Lower East Side of New York. According to the house, it was conceived as a scent of change and rebirth, tied to a neighborhood the founders describe as the turnover of the city.
The composition is signed Frank Voelkl, the Firmenich perfumer best known for Le Labo Santal 33. "I aimed to create a sense of emotional wellbeing through a simplistic fragrance structure," Voelkl has said. "The use of ingredients extracted from natural roots like ginger and iris tie us back to our earth, making us feel grounded and centered."
The brief deliberately resists easy categorization. "You don't know what to make of it right away, and that's what makes it interesting," says Gerstner in the press material. "You can't put your finger on it." Earthy materials are rendered airy in the composition: ginger unsettles, iris brings focus, quince and muguet amplify the rooty character, and dry cedar tones and cashmere-like tonka give a spicy roundness under more fleeting bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
16A Orchard is presented in the current Aedes flacon, the fluted glass bottle with peacock blue accents and a matte black insignia-stamped cap that marks the house's relaunched chapter from its Orchard Street location.
Olfactive pyramid
16A Orchard is built around natural roots, ginger and iris, treated to feel grounding rather than gourmand or powdery. Fleeting citrus and spice lift the opening, and a soft musky-woody base gives the second-skin effect. The notes below follow the materials disclosed by the house.
On skin the arc is gentle. The citrus and cardamom lift fades quickly into the ginger and iris heart, the core of the composition, before the musk, suede and tonka base settles close to the skin. Longevity is moderate, in keeping with the deliberately simple, grounding structure, and the trail is soft and intimate throughout.
Olfactive profile
The olfactive profile of 16A Orchard is grounding and abstract. Ginger and iris are read as roots rather than as a spicy note or a powdery flower, and the surrounding musk, suede and tonka give a warm, soft, second-skin effect. It is the most minimalist composition in the recent Aedes line, designed for emotional comfort rather than projection.
The distinctive signature is its refusal to resolve into a single recognizable note. That ambiguity is intentional, a scent meant to adapt to the wearer, and it places 16A Orchard in the contemporary lineage of refined musky skin scents rather than in any classical family.
Not just a smell but a feeling: ginger and iris pulled back to their roots, worn like soft fabric against the skin.
