Bukhara

Bukhara is a tuberose that travels, fleshy and solar on the surface yet dark and woody in its oud-laced base. It carries the white flowers of a Silk Road oasis into a warm, enveloping oriental that feels both opulent and grounded.

History and inspiration

Bukhara belongs to La Route de la Soie, the Silk Road collection Ormonde Jayne launched in October 2020 and has expanded since. Added in 2024, it takes its name from Bukhara, the historic oasis city in Uzbekistan, and translates that crossroads of cultures into a generous floral oriental.

It opens on a juicy accord of peach, blackcurrant and bergamot, then blooms into a rich white-floral heart of tuberose, orange blossom and sambac jasmine. The base anchors that brightness in vanilla, amber, sandalwood and white cedar, with oud adding a dark, leathery edge that keeps the flowers from turning sweet.

Official olfactive pyramid

The olfactive architecture of Bukhara is presented below using the maison's own Head, Heart and Soul labels.

Head
Peach, Blackcurrantvelvety and tart fruit
Bergamotzesty brightness
Heart
Tuberose, Orange Blossomfleshy and solar white flowers
Sambac Jasmineheady floral depth
Soul
Vanilla, Amberround, resinous warmth
Sandalwood, White Cedar, Oudcreamy and dark woods

Olfactive profile

The signature of Bukhara is the tension between its creamy white flowers and its woody base. The tuberose is fleshy and full rather than green, the jasmine adds heady depth, and the oud and cedar pull everything toward a darker, more resinous register.

On skin it is warm and projecting at first, then settles into a soft, woody-vanilla drydown. It reads as opulent without being old-fashioned, the oud kept smooth rather than medicinal.

When and where to wear

Bukhara suits cooler evenings and occasions where a little opulence is welcome. Its white flowers and oud carry well, so a light hand is enough to fill a room.

It is at its best in autumn and winter, when its warm, woody base has room to develop, though its floral heart keeps it from feeling purely wintry.
