History and inspiration
Byzance is one of the seven perfumes that launched La Route de la Soie in October 2020, the collection Ormonde Jayne created to mark its twentieth anniversary. It takes its name from Byzantium and its capital Constantinople, evoked through warmth, gilding and soft leather rather than literal imagery.
The opening is fruity and creamy, with blackcurrant buds, a lactonic accord and pink berries, before the composition turns to a woody heart of pale wood, cashmeran and buttery orris. The base is where Byzance settles, a smooth blend of moss, suede, Madagascar vanilla and balsamic resins that reads soft and enveloping.

The signature of Byzance is comfort. The suede is soft rather than raw, the orris butter adds a powdery, almost edible richness, and the balsamic resins bring warmth without heaviness. It is a leather composition with the rough edges smoothed away.
On skin it stays close and warm, a quiet sensuality rather than a statement. The fruity opening gives way quickly to the woody, powdery heart, and the drydown is long, soft and gently resinous.
