Quick answers
History
Gris Charnel comes from BDK Parfums, the house David Benedek founded in Paris (France) in 2016. It arrived in late 2019. Auparfum listed it in December 2019 as one of two new additions to the house’s “Parisienne” collection.
The brand’s story is a Paris night by the Seine that runs on until morning. The name plays on that contrast: the grey of Parisian skies, the carnal warmth of skin.
The scent now sits among the house’s “Signatures”, the creations BDK presents as its emblems. It comes as an eau de parfum and as an extrait, each in 100, 50 and 10 ml.
Per the house, the extrait is concentrated at 30%. It keeps the signature and thickens it with patchouli, vanilla and cedar. Bijaoui says that revisiting a scent that has already found its audience is much harder than starting from a blank page.
In 2023 the extrait won Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year at the Fragrance Foundation Awards in the United States, credited to Mane and Mathilde Bijaoui.
Fragrance notes
The pyramid below is the one BDK Parfums publishes for the eau de parfum.
The perfumer’s own text also names cistus essential oil, which is missing from the official eau de parfum table. It acts as a dark counterpoint to the iris.
The extrait has its own list. Top: cardamom, black tea extract, fig accord. Heart: Moroccan iris, cistus, Madagascan Bourbon vetiver. Base: Indonesian patchouli, Madagascan vanilla, sandalwood, US cedar, Brazilian tonka bean.
Scent profile
Gris Charnel’s scent profile rests on the light-and-shade effect its perfumer describes. Fig and black tea give a green, dry opening. Cardamom adds a cool spice. At the heart, powdery iris meets the darker cistus.
The base joins sandalwood, Bourbon vetiver and tonka bean. Auparfum read it in December 2019 as a warm, milky cocoon: a skin-close woody, soft rather than dry.

When and where to wear
BDK Parfums gives no wearing advice. Its story of a Paris night that lasts until morning, and the milky warmth of the base, point to evenings and the cooler months.
