Quick answers
History
Né il giorno né l'ora is the twelfth fragrance of the UNUM collection. As so often with the house, the starting point is scriptural: the parable of the ten virgins from the Gospel of Matthew, which also gives the perfume its name. Five wise virgins kept oil for their lamps while awaiting the bridegroom; the other five, having gone to find more, find the door closed. “Stay awake, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour,” we read in Matthew.
Yet the house warns that this is only the start. The idea is to go beyond the evangelical words and face fear on a deeper, more intense level, where conflicting emotions gather, even to the point of experiencing the seductive charm of danger, that amor fati Nietzsche claimed, the presence of the uncontrolled. Fear, Sorcinelli says, arises not from a lack of courage but from the presence of what we most desire.
The perfume conveys the idea of destruction, of chosen silence, and of the introspection needed to delve into the depths of the self. Seeking to control fear stirs an attraction toward it, even a pleasure, toward a sought-after, desired, mastered fear. It is in that most muffled shadow that a person displays their true nature, made of contradictions and desires, an unspoken being-for-death.
The object itself imposes this climate. Faithful to the UNUM collection, the silver bottle is this time enclosed in a “silent” black velvet bag, sealed in a heat-shrunk sheath that must physically be cut with the metal scissors set inside the box. You do not open Né il giorno né l'ora, you release it. Released in 2023, it forms with Chiudi gli occhi e poi vedi the house's diptych of fear.
Harmonic evolution
Filippo Sorcinelli is an organist; he does not conceive his perfumes as a pyramid of volatility but as a score. Né il giorno né l'ora is therefore stated in three movements, subject, counter-subject and tail, as the house publishes them under the heading of harmonic evolution.
The subject lays down an ambery, woody, musky base: sandalwood and tonka bean envelop, amber and musk extend the warmth. The counter-subject opens an unexpected breach, an iodine marine note that jasmine, rose and iris turn floral and powdery. The tail of citrus, cardamom and galbanum brings a green, bitter freshness, like a lucidity at the edge of dread.
Olfactory profile
Né il giorno né l'ora is a dark, held amber. From the opening the base takes hold: creamy sandalwood, tonka bean and amber form a deep, almost enveloping warmth that musk extends. This is far from a gourmand amber; it is an introspective amber, turned inward.
The counter-subject is the perfume's true signature. At the heart of that warmth, an iodine marine note opens a cold, unexpected space, a breath that recalls waiting and uncertainty. Jasmine, rose and iris dress it in a floral, powdery veil, yet never fully warm it: the tension remains, between the heat of the base and the cold of the heart.
The tail brings lucidity. Lemon, bergamot and cardamom give a clear freshness, while galbanum adds a bitter green and cedar a woody dryness. Longevity is that of an extrait, long and skin-close; the sillage, ambery and dark, leaves a grave trace, in keeping with a perfume that looks fear in the face.
“Fear always needs something else to be itself: not a lack of courage, but the presence of what we most desire.”Filippo Sorcinelli, on Né il giorno né l'ora
