Origin and provenance
Hyraceum is the petrified mass formed by the excrement and urine of the rock hyrax, Procavia capensis, a small mammal of southern and eastern Africa and the Near East. The trade also calls it africa stone.
The animal defecates in the same place, generation after generation, on communal sites researchers call middens. The accumulation compacts, hardens and eventually mineralizes into a black, glassy mass.
Hyraceum is therefore not a glandular secretion, unlike animal musk, civet and castoreum. It is gathered, not taken.
Olfactory profile
The profile is fermented, animalic and warm. It reads as tobacco, leather, a urinous facet that fades on dilution, and a woody depth some compare to agarwood.
It is the most complete animal material in the palette, in that it alone crosses what musk, castoreum and civet each contribute separately. Aging, counted in centuries rather than months, strips out all harshness.
Its role is that of a powerful fixative and a skin base. A few drops of tincture give a composition an animal footing no synthetic musk reproduces exactly.
Production and extraction
The mass is gathered from rocky outcrops, broken up, then macerated in alcohol. Tincture is the common working form, at low dilutions.
Aging renders the material sterile, which is what makes its use possible. Young hyraceum has neither the profile nor the safety of aged hyraceum.
The resource does not renew on a human timescale. What is gathered in a season took centuries, sometimes millennia, to form.
Regulatory status, as of 8 September 2026
Conservation. The IUCN lists the rock hyrax as least concern. The species is abundant and in places treated as a minor pest. No conservation pressure weighs on the animal.
IFRA. No IFRA Standard covers hyraceum. The index of IFRA Standards, fifty-first amendment, does not mention it.
Animal welfare. Harvesting requires no capture, no restraint and no killing. That is what earns hyraceum its reputation as an acceptable animal material, and the reputation is deserved.
What that means, and what nobody says. The real constraint on hyraceum is not regulatory but scientific. Hyrax middens are a palaeoenvironmental archive used to reconstruct the climate of southern African drylands across more than fifty thousand years. Each layer carries datable pollen and plant biomarkers. Commercial harvesting destroys that archive, and destroys it permanently. It is the only material in the palette whose stake concerns not the animal but the memory of the climate.
History in perfumery
Hyraceum began as a South African traditional medicine, used against epilepsy and convulsions among other conditions. Its perfumery use in the West is recent.
It entered the natural and niche palette from the 2000s onward, at the moment when the effective loss of animal musk and civet left a gap in the animal register.
Its adoption therefore rests on substitution: it supplies the animality that law and ethics withdrew from the other materials, without carrying their liabilities.
Notable perfumes
Hyraceum remains a material for independent perfumers and fully natural compositions, where it appears as a tincture in small proportion. It rarely shows in published pyramids, because it works as a base rather than as a declared note.

Why this material matters in niche perfumery
Hyraceum is the material that moves the ethical question. Judged by the suffering of the animal, it is beyond reproach. Judged by what it destroys, it becomes arguable.
It is also the proof that a natural palette is not automatically a sustainable one. A resource can be obtained without violence and still be non-renewable.
