Sample set

A sample set is a curated kit of five to fifteen perfume vials, 1 to 2 ml each, put together by a third-party retailer or a community operator. It sits next to the brand-issued discovery set as the more open, theme-driven format favored by online specialty stores and split-decant communities.

Definition

A sample set, also called a sampler kit or exploration set, is a curated kit of five to fifteen perfume vials in the 1 to 2 ml range, sold under a stated theme. Unlike a brand-issued discovery set, the sample set is typically assembled by a third-party retailer, sometimes by a community operator. Retail prices run from 20 to 80 dollars depending on vial count and curation effort (source: Luckyscent).

Origin and history

The format grew out of small-volume online retail in the early 2000s in the United States. Luckyscent (Los Angeles, founded 2002) was an early mover, with curated packs and a Custom Sample Pack starting at 4 dollars per 1 ml vial filled to 0.7 ml (source: Luckyscent Samples). Surrender to Chance opened a parallel community channel where every fragrance is hand-decanted to order. Twisted Lily, in Brooklyn, added the theme-curated angle with its Best Sellers Sample Pack.

Use in perfumery

The sample set works as a low-friction exploration tool for collections where a full bottle often runs above 300 dollars, as with Maison Francis Kurkdjian whose Baccarat Rouge 540 sits near 330 dollars per 70 ml. Theme curation organizes sets by note family (oud, rose, leather), by house or by historical era. Sets sometimes come with a voucher toward a full bottle, on the model practiced by Luckyscent (source: Twisted Lily).
