Quick answers
History of the house
Parfums de Nicolaï was founded in Paris in 1989 as Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur. The founders were perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï and her husband Jean-Louis Michau. She composed; he ran product development, the boutiques, production and management.
Premium Beauty News quoted the founding line in 2019: “un parfumeur libre de son style de création, pour des parfums de très haute qualité, sans contrainte de marketing” [a perfumer free to create, very high quality fragrances, no marketing constraints]. The house describes its founder as the first woman perfumer to found her own house. We found no independent source confirming that claim.
The first boutique opened in 1989 on avenue Raymond-Poincaré, in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. Per the official timeline, the first fragrance, New York, came out the same year. Maharadjah launched a home fragrance line in 1990. A second boutique followed in 1992 on rue de Grenelle, in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
In 1995 the house set up its own manufacturing workshop at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin (France). It now controls the full chain, from buying raw materials to selling in its own stores. Premium Beauty News called that model rare in 2019. Fragrances are composed in the house laboratory near the Palais-Royal.
Around 2000, Fig-Tea became one of the house’s hits, and Nicolaï opened its first London boutique (United Kingdom). New addresses in Paris and Neuilly-sur-Seine, and a second London store, followed between 2015 and 2020. In 2026 the house website cites more than 400 points of sale in 75 countries.
Axel Michau de Nicolaï succeeded his father at the helm in 2014, the house’s 25th anniversary. Jean-Louis Michau died on 20 October 2019. Edwige Michau de Nicolaï joined in 2024 as co-manager. Premium Beauty News described the capital as “100 % familial” [100% family-owned] in 2019; in 2026 the house still calls itself independent.
The collections
The Nicolaï catalog is not organized into narrative collections. It reads more as a set of lines, which the official timeline allows us to date.
Eaux de Parfum Intenses
The line opened in 2009 with Patchouli Intense, which the house presents as a deeper, more structured phase of its style. Ambre Cashmere (2015) was the first fragrance born of Patricia de Nicolaï’s work with her son as evaluator.
The 2023 pastry trio
Saint Honoré, Macaron Bourbon and Pavlova draw on classic French pâtisserie. According to the house, Saint Honoré was a finalist at the 2025 FIFI Awards in the best niche fragrance category.
Home fragrance
Maharadjah launched a home fragrance line in 1990. The house says it was one of the very first to do so, a claim we could not verify elsewhere.
Notable perfumes
Patricia de Nicolaï signs the entire catalog. Years come from the house’s official timeline. Number One, often cited as the first release, does not appear there, so we leave it undated.

Olfactory signature
The Nicolaï signature starts with a method. One perfumer has composed the whole catalog since 1989, so the house reads as the work of an author rather than a brand. Premium Beauty News noted in 2019 that every creation still came from Patricia de Nicolaï.
The second trait is industrial. Composing in Paris, manufacturing at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and selling through its own boutiques keeps every step under the family’s control. The house publishes note pyramids on its product pages; we only list what we have checked.
A perfumer’s house in the strict sense: one signature since 1989, and a family that keeps the whole chain in its own hands.
