What is a niche perfume house?

The houses in this guide founded a genre, set a way of working or left a lasting mark on the market. Some are over a century old and became niche after the fact; others were born with the word.

Many have changed hands. Knowing who owns a house takes nothing away from its fragrances, but it says a lot about its distribution and its future, so each owner is given with a date.

The houses to know

The heritage houses

Two old houses, born long before the word niche, that their history and fragrances now place in the category.

Penhaligon’s

1870 · London (United Kingdom) · William Penhaligon Owner: Puig (2015)

William Penhaligon, a barber from Penzance in Cornwall, set up at the Jermyn Street hammam in London in 1870. He composed Hammam Bouquet there in 1872, then Blenheim Bouquet in 1902 for the ninth Duke of Marlborough. The house received its first Royal Warrant in 1903, from Queen Alexandra. The Spanish group Puig bought it in 2015.

Creed

1760 (claimed) · London (United Kingdom) · James Henry Creed (claimed) Owner: L’Oréal (2026)

The house claims it was founded in London in 1760 by James Henry Creed, a lineage no independent source documents. Gabe Oppenheim’s investigation, The Ghost Perfumer (2021), also challenges the authorship of several fragrances. Its great success remains Aventus (2010). Bought by Kering Beauté in 2023, Creed passed to L’Oréal with Kering Beauté on 31 March 2026.

The pioneers, 1961 to 1994

Houses founded before niche had a name. They wrote its rules: the authored house, chosen distribution, the fragrance that does not try to please everyone.

Diptyque

1961 · Paris (France) · Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot, Yves Coueslant Owner: Manzanita Capital (2005)

Diptyque opened in 1961 at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain as a shop for fabrics and objects. The name comes from the shopfront, whose two windows frame the door like a diptych. The first scented candles came in 1963 and the first eau de toilette, L’Eau, in 1968. L’Ombre dans l’Eau and Philosykos followed. The Manzanita Capital fund has owned it since 2005.

L’Artisan Parfumeur

1976 · Paris (France) · Jean Laporte Owner: Puig (2015)

Jean Laporte, a chemist and botanist, founded the house in 1976. Its current owner, Puig, writes that he pioneered what would later be recognized as niche perfumery. Mûre et Musc, in 1978, put white musk at the heart of the composition, and Premier Figuier founded the fig family in 1994. Puig bought the house in 2015, together with Penhaligon’s.

Goutal

1981 · Paris (France) · Annick Goutal Owner: Interparfums, intellectual property (2025)

Annick Goutal opened her first boutique on rue de Bellechasse and launched Eau d’Hadrien, a lemon and cypress citrus, from the start. The house became Goutal Paris in 2018, led by her daughter Camille Goutal. In March 2025, Interparfums bought the brand’s intellectual property; Amorepacific Europe keeps operating it under licence for a set period.

Amouage

1983 · Muscat (Oman) · Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi Owner: SABCO, majority; L’Oréal, minority (2025)

Founded in 1983 to bring Omani perfumery to the world, Amouage presented itself as “The Gift of Kings”. Its first fragrance, Gold, was composed by Guy Robert. The house is known for frankincense, resins and oud, and for Interlude Man (2012). SABCO remains the majority shareholder; L’Oréal disclosed a minority stake in February 2025.

Parfums de Nicolaï

1989 · Paris (France) · Patricia de Nicolaï and Jean-Louis Michau Owner: Founding family

Patricia de Nicolaï, a descendant of Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain and an ISIPCA graduate, founded the house in 1989 with her husband Jean-Louis Michau. The same year she composed New York. The house controls the whole chain, with its own production and filling workshop at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin (France). Its capital has stayed in the family.

Serge Lutens

1992 (Shiseido), own brand in 2000 · Paris (France) · Serge Lutens Owner: Shiseido (2016)

Serge Lutens worked with Shiseido from 1980. In 1992, under his direction, Shiseido launched Féminité du Bois and opened the Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido in Paris. His own brand was born in 2000, built on Ambre Sultan, Iris Silver Mist and Chergui. Shiseido bought the brand at the end of 2015, a deal completed in January 2016.

Comme des Garçons Parfums

1994 (first fragrance) · Rei Kawakubo and Christian Astuguevieille Owner: Comme des Garçons; fragrances produced by Puig since 2002

Rei Kawakubo’s fashion house launched its first fragrance in 1994, with Christian Astuguevieille, who died in Paris on 13 February 2026. It invented the “anti-perfume”: Odeur 53, in 1998, smells of oxygen, flaming rock and laundry drying in the wind. More than ninety fragrances followed, including the Incense series. Puig has produced them since 2002.

The age of the authors, 2000 to 2007

The perfumer steps out of the shadows, houses multiply, and niche becomes a market. This is the decade that set today’s model.

Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle

2000 · Paris (France) · Frédéric Malle Owner: Estée Lauder (2015)

Frédéric Malle founded a publishing house for perfume in 2000: each perfumer signs their fragrance, named on the bottle. The house describes itself as the first to bring perfumers from the shadows to the spotlight. It gave us Musc Ravageur, Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady. Estée Lauder announced its acquisition in November 2014 and completed it in January 2015. Frédéric Malle left the house at the end of June 2024.

Ormonde Jayne

2001 · London (United Kingdom) · Linda Pilkington Owner: Independent

The house was born from an order for fifty scented candles for Chanel Fine Jewellery: a company was needed to send the invoice. Linda Pilkington opened her boutique on Old Bond Street in October 2001 and makes her fragrances in her own studio in Kent (United Kingdom). The name joins her middle name, Jayne, and Ormonde Terrace. Ormonde Woman is still one of its signatures, and the house remains independent.

Tauer Perfumes

2005 · Zurich (Switzerland) · Andy Tauer Owner: Independent

Andy Tauer, a trained chemist and self-taught perfumer, composes every fragrance of his house himself, handmade in small batches in Zurich. His second fragrance, L’Air du Désert Marocain (2005), put independent artisan perfumery on the map. The house remains an independent Swiss company.

État Libre d’Orange

2006 · Paris (France) · Étienne de Swardt Owner: Not disclosed

Étienne de Swardt, formerly at Givenchy Parfums, named his house after the Orange Free State, his native region in South Africa. In 2006 he launched nine fragrances at once, by Nathalie Feisthauer, Antoine Lie and Antoine Maisondieu, including Secretions Magnifiques. Provocation is the stated program.

Juliette Has a Gun

2006 · Paris (France) · Romano Ricci Owner: Founders with Cathay Capital and Weinberg Capital Partners (2023)

Romano Ricci, great-grandson of Nina Ricci, launched the house at Colette in Paris in December 2006. The first fragrances, Lady Vengeance and Miss Charming, were by Francis Kurkdjian. It became known for Not a Perfume (2010). Cathay Capital took a stake in 2021, then increased it in 2023 as Weinberg Capital Partners came in.

Le Labo

2006 · New York (United States) · Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi Owner: Estée Lauder (2014)

Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi opened their first lab in 2006 at 233 Elizabeth Street in New York. Each fragrance is blended by hand in front of the client at the time of purchase, and the label carries a personal name. Worldwide success came with Santal 33 (2011). Estée Lauder bought the house in November 2014.

Byredo

2006 · Stockholm (Sweden) · Ben Gorham Owner: Puig (2022, full ownership in 2024)

Ben Gorham founded Byredo in 2006 and gave niche a clean, contemporary Scandinavian face, with Gypsy Water and then Mojave Ghost. The brand expanded into beauty, home and leather goods. Puig took a majority in 2022 and full ownership in 2024; Ben Gorham left at the end of June 2025.

Escentric Molecules

2006 · London (United Kingdom) · Geza Schoen and Paul White Owner: Independent

Perfumer Geza Schoen and creative director Paul White built the house on one idea: a fragrance made of a single synthetic molecule. Molecule 01, made only of Iso E Super, is the proof, and the house claims it started the skin scent movement. It is still run by its founders, with no outside shareholders.

Nasomatto

2007 · Amsterdam (Netherlands) · Alessandro Gualtieri Owner: Independent

Italian perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri, trained at Haarmann & Reimer, set up his house in Amsterdam. Its name means “mad nose” in Italian. Its highly concentrated extraits, sold without note lists, made Black Afgano (2009) a cult fragrance. Gualtieri later founded a second house, Orto Parisi.

Xerjoff

2007 · Turin (Italy) · Sergio Momo and Dominique Salvo Owner: Xerjoff Group

Sergio Momo and Dominique Salvo formally founded Xerjoff in Turin in 2007, with a first collection, 17/17 Stone Label. The house revived Casamorati, a Bologna (Italy) house founded in 1888, in 2009, and opened its first boutique in the Dubai Mall in 2010. Its XJ 1861 Naxos topped the Fragrantica vote for best niche fragrance of all time every year from 2022 to 2025.

The new niche, 2009 to 2016

Niche goes global, carried by social media and by houses that aim for luxury from day one. Investment funds and large groups move in.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian

2009 · Paris (France) · Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya Owner: LVMH, majority (2017)

Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya opened their first boutique at 5 rue d’Alger in Paris. Baccarat Rouge 540, born for the 250th anniversary of the Baccarat crystal house, became one of the most imitated fragrances in the world. LVMH announced a majority stake in March 2017; both founders remain shareholders.

Parfums de Marly

2009 · Julien Sprecher Owner: Advent International, majority (2023)

Julien Sprecher founded a house inspired by the splendour of eighteenth-century France. Layton (2016) and Delina (2017) drive its growth: with Initio, the group reached 780 million dollars in retail sales in the year to March 2026. Advent International has been the majority shareholder since 2023; Julien Sprecher remains a shareholder and creative director.

ROJA London

2011 · London (United Kingdom) · Roja Dove Owner: Extravaganza Beauty (2026)

The first, Beaver and Panda, came out in 2014. Squid, composed by Céline Barel, won the Fragrance Foundation’s Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year award in 2020 (United States).

BDK Parfums

2016 · Paris (France) · David Benedek Owner: Founder, majority; LVMH Luxury Ventures, minority (2025)

At the end of November 2025, LVMH Luxury Ventures took a minority stake, the house’s first outside investment.

Their fragrances appear in the most iconic niche fragrances when they shaped the genre.
