Aurélien Guichard co-founded Matière Première in Paris in 2019 and stocked it through US niche retail almost immediately. Twisted Lily in Brooklyn, Aedes Perfumery in Tribeca and Luckyscent in Los Angeles ran the launch range that year, and the house has since landed at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman. In parallel, since May 2018, he holds the senior perfumer title at Takasago, the Tokyo-headquartered fragrance and flavor major, working out of the Paris fine fragrance studio. His training reads from outside the family. He completed university studies in the United Kingdom in his early twenties. He then enrolled in the Givaudan perfumery school in Paris at age 21 for the three-year in-house program. The Givaudan track is one of three industry routes alongside the Firmenich school and the ISIPCA in Versailles. That route routinely produces contract perfumers rather than family brand authors. He comes from a Grasse perfumery family seven branches deep. His grandparents grew roses and jasmine for the fragrance industry, and his father, Jean Guichard, is the perfumer behind Calvin Klein Obsession and Paco Rabanne La Nuit, both released in 1985. His mother is a sculptor. He was born in Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, and raised in Paris. In 2016 he closed the loop by buying farmland at Tourrettes-sur-Loup, above Grasse, where he now grows centifolia roses, tuberose and lavandin that feed Matière Première formulas. The brand presents him as the only working perfumer to own, plant, harvest and formulate with his own crops, and he runs a parallel sourcing partnership with the Grasse naturals house Robertet.

What is observable on US shelves is consistent across the Matière Première launches and the contract work. Aurélien Guichard writes short, builds around one hero material and refuses to bury the central note under screen layers. Vanilla Powder reads as a clean vanilla absolute set on quiet musks. Parisian Musc reads as a white musk study with ambrette and iris support. Falcon Leather reads as a leather accord pulled forward, with birch tar held in a controlled register that passes both EU REACH and the IFRA 2024 ceiling.

His hallmark style across the contract catalog falls into two registers. The May rose and tuberose he grows in Tourrettes-sur-Loup feed selected Matière Première formulas, and his partnership with the Grasse naturals house Robertet supplies the iris, lavandin and enfleurage-style absolutes. Few working contract perfumers control their sourcing this directly. Most rely on the global supply lines of Takasago, Firmenich, IFF or Givaudan. He runs both.

Critics group him with Jean-Claude Ellena and Dominique Ropion in the contemporary French canon, where the legible accord matters more than the architectural maximalism inherited from Jacques Guerlain. The Matière Première launch tipped him out of the pure contract-perfumer category into the author-perfumer tier, alongside Francis Kurkdjian for Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Celine Ellena for The Different Company.
