History

Ambrosivs is the Milanese counterpart to Tu es Petrus. It is reserved for container_zerouno, Filippo Sorcinelli's second mono-brand store, opened in spring 2023 on via Moscova in Milan. The name points to the city and to its bishop and patron saint, Ambrose, one of the major figures of the fourth-century Church.

The fragrance evokes the liturgies and processions of December 7, the day the metropolis stops in honor of Saint Ambrose. The house describes it as a complex, articulate composition in which precious incense materials, tonka bean, elemi, artemisia and birch prevail among others, framed by smoky accords, almost of urban smog.

The object itself extends the story. The bottle bears the fabric silhouette of the façade of the medieval Ambrosian basilica; the cap is dressed in the cope, the robe the bishop wears during processions. The cope, in silver brocade, comes from the archives of Filippo Sorcinelli's LAVS atelier, and a gold metallic filigree rose window, set with an onyx spherule, seals it.

Ambrosivs is offered as an extrait de parfum, unisex, and is available only in Milan. It is the most austere and aromatic of the exclusives presented here, the opposite of Tu es Petrus's solar softness. We follow the house's published list of materials here.

Olfactory pyramid

Like the house's other compositions, Ambrosivs is stated as a score, subject, counter-subject and tail, exactly as the house publishes it. It is one of the fullest in the catalogue.

The axis is contrast: an opening of bitter incense and green herbs, a smoky heart of birch, and a woody, ambery tail that warms the smoke without putting it out.

Olfactory profile

Ambrosivs opens on a keen incense. Elemi and citruses give it a lemony edge, while juniper, rosemary, artemisia and absinthe bring a green, herbaceous, almost medicinal bitterness. It is an austere, taut entry, far removed from the softness of Tu es Petrus.

The heart adds the smoke. Birch introduces a leathery, smoky, almost tarry note the house likens to an accord of urban smog; cedar, cyclamen and cloves surround it with a dry, spicy wood. This is the darkest layer, the one that gives the fragrance its dimension of procession, of haze and of city.

The tail warms the whole. Vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, cistus and amber compose a woody, ambery base that softens the smoke without erasing it. Longevity is that of an extrait, long; the sillage is dense and complex, best kept for demanding incense lovers.
