Quick answers
History
Nishane unveiled Ani at Esxence in Milan (Italy) in 2019, as part of the No Boundaries collection. ÇaFleureBon singled it out as one of the standouts of that edition.
The name is that of an ancient city now in ruins, which the house says is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The scent draws on an Anatolian folk song, “Sarı Gelin” in Turkish and “Sari Gyalin” in Armenian.
For Nishane, the near-identical titles point to a culture the two peoples share. The house dedicates the perfume to removing borders between people, in line with the collection’s name.
Ani also means “memory” in Turkish. Founders Mert Güzel and Murat Katran dedicated it to their friend Cem Karabacak, who died while it was being created.
The composition is by Cécile Zarokian. Ani appears in the project list her company publishes, and ÇaFleureBon named her as the perfumer in June 2019. The same list includes a separate Ani X project for Nishane.
The house now presents Ani as one of its global hits, “shown by the perfume lovers as the best vanilla scent”.
Fragrance notes
These are the notes Nishane publishes on its official page. Fresh spice on top gives way to rose and cardamom, then a long vanilla and woody base.
Seven materials sit in the base, which is why the vanilla grows as the hours pass.
Scent profile
Nishane sums Ani up in three words: spicy, woody, vanilla. The house calls it a “romantic and calm” perfume.
The pyramid bears that out. Blue ginger, pink pepper and cardamom frame a vanilla that rests on benzoin, patchouli and woods.
Turkish rose and blackcurrant stay in the background but round out the heart. That is why Osmetheca files it as a spicy floral amber rather than a straight vanilla.
“Just like music, all forms of art including perfume creation have no boundaries.”Murat Katran and Mert Güzel, quoted by ÇaFleureBon, 5 June 2019
Key characteristics
When and where to wear
Nishane gives no wearing advice. The spiced vanilla and balsamic base suit cooler months and evenings, and extrait strength calls for a light hand.
