Quick answers
History
Animal Mondain is a reverie on the 1930s and modernism. Back then, mass culture from the United States looked to Hollywood glamour, swing and Broadway musicals for an antidote to the Great Depression, while cinema manufactured its icons, from Greta Garbo to Marlene Dietrich. It is Dietrich who, in the unreal cloud of her cigarette smoke, imposed a style that wavered between assumed androgyny and theatrical glamour. From that image Pierre Guillaume keeps tobacco as a material of gender-free seduction.
The setting of the scent is a precise room: the smoking room of Villa Cavrois, inaugurated in 1932 and designed by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens. A small circular space with the air of an ocean liner cabin, fitted with a mahogany cigar cabinet and leather benches, it sums up the modernism the perfumer wants to translate: luminous, simple, elegant. Animal Mondain restores its atmosphere, the laughter of a worldly crowd splitting the tobacco scrolls that stretch along the woodwork.
The accord is highly legible. Pear tree leaves open on a fruity green freshness; Turkish tobacco absolute, tinted with hay and honey, forms the warm heart; mahogany wood, musk and amber close the trail on a woody, powdery softness. Launched in 2020 in the Black Collection and classed as a woody tobacco with fruity, animalic and powdered facets, Animal Mondain is a drawing-room tobacco, dry and tailored, far removed from honeyed gourmand tobaccos.
Olfactory pyramid
Animal Mondain unfolds in three movements, from the green freshness of the leaves to the dry warmth of tobacco and mahogany.
Tobacco stays the centre of gravity, framed by green fruit and honeyed wood.
Olfactory profile
Animal Mondain is a dry, elegant tobacco, more woody than gourmand. The green freshness of pear tree leaves opens it without sugar, like a breath of air before stepping into a smoky room. Then comes the Turkish tobacco absolute, its amber heart tinted with hay and honey, giving the scent its hushed drawing-room density.
The base plays restraint: mahogany, musk and amber extend the tobacco without weighing it down, over a powdery warmth. It is a gender-free fragrance with a measured trail, suggesting the leather of a bench and the varnished wood of a cigar cabinet rather than a candied tobacco. It speaks to those who love tailored, retro tobaccos in the Art Deco spirit the house claims.
Stripped of all artifice, it is a gender-free olfactory creation inspired by the modernist architecture of a Mallet-Stevens smoking room.Pierre Guillaume, perfumer

When and where to wear
Animal Mondain is a mid-season and evening tobacco. Its woody dryness makes it more wearable than heavy tobaccos, but it is in the cool of autumn and winter that its smoking-room warmth comes through.
