Quick answers
History
Bois Impérial reached shops in mid-December 2020. It comes from Essential Parfums, the French house founded by Géraldine Archambault, and is signed by Quentin Bisch of Givaudan.
Archambault asked for a dry woody scent with unexpected fresh top notes and a generous sillage that would not overwhelm.
The perfume honours her Vietnamese grandmother, who came from Huế (Vietnam), the former imperial city. She met her husband on the bridge over the Perfume River.
Bisch built the scent as a showcase for Akigalawood, an exclusive material the house says is upcycled from patchouli through biotechnology. He told ÇaFleureBon he kept the formula “relatively short and direct”, in keeping with the brand’s name.
A more concentrated Extrait adds black pepper, rose absolute, Atlas cedar, leathery notes, fir balsam and labdanum. For the scent’s fifth anniversary, the house issued a limited collector’s edition.
Fragrance notes
Essential Parfums does not publish a three-tier pyramid. It describes the composition in three stages, set out below in the brand’s own terms.
The freesia some retailers list does not appear on the house’s page.
Scent profile
The house describes freshly crushed Thai basil leaves, sharpened by the peppery, grapefruit-like facets of Timut pepper. That fresh contrast opens onto a bold woody signature.
Haitian vetiver and Georgywood, a molecule with cedar tones, form the woody heart, lit by the floral touch of Petalia. Akigalawood then signs the base, backed by Indonesian patchouli and Ambrofix.
Osmetheca reads it as a spicy woody rather than an aromatic: the basil is an accent, while pepper and Akigalawood carry the scent.
“I created this fragrance around a precious and extraordinary wood: Akigalawood. Adorned with fresh spices, it is a great woody note made of contrasts, between patchouli and Thai Basil.”Quentin Bisch, Essential Parfums
