Quick answers
History
Do Son was released in 2005 by Diptyque, the house founded in Paris (France) in 1961. In November 2005, Now Smell This called it Diptyque’s first new women’s fragrance since Jardin Clos in 2003.The scent is named after Do Son, a coastal town in Vietnam. Per Diptyque, co-founder Yves Coueslant spent his childhood summers there. The sea breeze, the house writes, carried the heady, softly spicy scent of tuberoses.
In 2005, the official story quoted by Now Smell This went further. Coueslant “grew up in Haiphong, a vast harbour in northern Indochina”, where his father, a lawyer, had settled.
His mother, worn down by the heat and the monsoon, loved “the bitter sweet fragrance of tuberoses.” The same Indochina memories had already inspired Tam Dao in 2003, per Now Smell This.
The current eau de toilette page adds a market scene. In Haiphong, the house says, tuberoses are wrapped with jasmine and ylang-ylang in large canna leaves as offerings.
Who created Do Son?
Diptyque does not name the perfumer on its page. Now Smell This updated its 2005 review: Do Son was developed by Fabrice Pellegrin, who also created Eau de Lierre for the house.
Born in Grasse (France) on 22 January 1969, the son of a perfumer, Pellegrin started at Robertet. Perfumer & Flavorist places him at Mane for more than 12 years before he joined Firmenich in 2008.
He is now Principal Perfumer and Director of Natural Product Innovation there. In December 2021, Firmenich announced his 14th François Coty Award and listed Diptyque’s Eau de Minthé among his creations.

Fragrance notes
Diptyque does not publish a pyramid for Do Son. The eau de toilette page, checked on 6 November 2026, lists four notes without splitting them into top, heart and base.
In 2005, the launch list reported by Now Smell This was different: tuberose, orange tree leaves, rose, benzoin, iris and white musk.
| Note | 2005 list | Official page, November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Tuberose | Yes | Yes |
| Orange tree | Orange tree leaves | Orange blossom |
| Jasmine | No | Yes |
| Marine accord | No | Yes |
| Rose, iris | Yes | No |
| Benzoin, white musk | Yes | No |
The house does not say whether the formula changed or only the note list was rewritten. Osmetheca therefore does not call it a reformulation.
Scent profile
Do Son’s scent profile is a lightened tuberose, far from the opulent classics. The house describes it as refreshed by the sea breeze.
Its distinctive signature is transparency. In 2005, Now Smell This found it “surprisingly light and dewy for a tuberose-based perfume”, with a distinct touch of green.
The review summed it up in one image: “like tuberose petals submerged in water.” It heard the watery lightness of Olivia Giacobetti, before learning Pellegrin’s name.
“Une tubéreuse au parfum emporté par les embruns, des notes de jasmin, fleur d’oranger. Comme une odeur d’été aux confins de la baie d’Along.”Diptyque, official Do Son Eau de toilette page. Translation: a tuberose whose scent is carried off by sea spray, with notes of jasmine and orange blossom, like a summer smell at the edge of Ha Long Bay.
Key characteristics
When and where to wear
Diptyque distinguishes its two concentrations. The eau de toilette renders the composition with lightness and vivacity; the eau de parfum leaves a more intense, longer trail.
In 2005, Now Smell This judged it fresher than sultry, better suited to spring than autumn, and discreet enough for the office. Osmetheca has not tested Do Son on skin.
