Epicentro

The first perfume of the Délire de Voyage collection, Epicentro is devoted to the earthquake that struck the Marche region, Filippo Sorcinelli's homeland, in 2016 and 2017. It tells in particular of Bolognola, a village of 138 inhabitants at the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park, seriously affected. More than a fragrance, it is an artistic installation and a project of aid.

History

Epicentro opens the Délire de Voyage collection, the line of limited editions Filippo Sorcinelli devotes to experiences lived in travel. Its first theme is the earthquake: Sorcinelli comes from the Marche, a region largely affected by the seismic crisis of 2016 and 2017, and it is to that phenomenon that this perfume is dedicated.

The story focuses on Bolognola, a small municipality of 138 inhabitants, the highest in the Marche, at the center of the Monti Sibillini National Park, hit hard by the earthquake. The earthquake is a disruptive, violent event that enters forcefully into the lives of those it touches, taking possession of their normality in a few seconds. External earthquakes, the house says, increase the earthquakes we carry inside.

Fear and suffocation from dust are the first step, escape the second, when everything is left behind, objects, memories, essential goods, in a desperate search for refuge outside. The view blurs, eyes and throat irritated by the dust of the collapses; in despair one seeks a small, faint light that will become the only point of reference.

Epicentro wants to be the reaction: to become aware of what has happened, to process it and to react through the security of a thought bound to Beauty. The bottle rests on a base that simulates the vibrations of the earthquake, and its closure faithfully reproduces a fragment of the rubble of Bolognola's town hall, picked up by Sorcinelli on his first visit. The project's proceeds go to the population, so that Bolognola may become Bononia again, the land of good things.

Harmonic evolution

Filippo Sorcinelli is an organist; he does not conceive his perfumes as a pyramid of volatility but as a score. Epicentro is therefore stated in three movements, subject, counter-subject and tail, as the house publishes them under the heading of harmonic evolution.

Subject
Angelica rootsearthy root
Benzoinsoft resin
Fir balmbalsamic conifer
Cuminwarm spice
Amberambery warmth
Guaiac woodsmoky wood
Counter-subject
Calamusaromatic root
Ambrette seedsvegetal musk
Matésmoky green
Tail
Virginia cedardry wood
Bergamot accordbright citrus
Cedar woodresinous wood

The subject lays down an earthy, balsamic matter: angelica roots and cumin evoke turned earth, benzoin, fir balm and amber bring the warmth, guaiac a smoky stroke. The counter-subject of calamus, ambrette and maté adds an aromatic, musky green, the vegetation of the Monti Sibillini. The tail of cedars and bergamot closes the perfume on a woody brightness, the small light of the story.

Olfactory profile

Epicentro is a grave, earthy woody, in keeping with its subject. From the opening, angelica roots and cumin evoke turned earth, raised dust, while benzoin and amber lay a consoling warmth. This is far from a decorative woody: it is an inhabited, almost telluric matter.

The counter-subject brings the life that resists. Maté unfurls a smoky green, calamus an aromatic root, ambrette a soft vegetal musk; together they evoke high-mountain vegetation and the breath that returns after the shock. It is the moment when the perfume moves from fear to reaction.

The tail brings brightness. Virginia cedar and cedar give a woody, resinous dryness, while a bergamot accord opens a clearing, that small, faint light turned point of reference. Longevity is that of an extrait, long and enveloping; the sillage, woody and balsamic, leaves a grave, comforting trace, in keeping with a reaction through Beauty.

“External earthquakes increase the earthquakes we carry inside. Epicentro wants to be the reaction: to become aware, to process it and to react through a thought bound to Beauty.”Filippo Sorcinelli, on Epicentro
