Quick answers
History
Intrigant Patchouli opened Pierre Guillaume’s theme 8 in 2005, the theme of patchouli, which the house gathers under the label “Patch-work”. The starting point is a gesture of transformation: to take patchouli, that “bohemian” wood laden with hippie associations, and turn it into an elegant, complex elixir in the spirit of the great chypres of the 1940s.
The perfumer’s choice is to ennoble patchouli rather than rein it in. Where the material often smells of damp earth and the attic, Intrigant Patchouli lifts it with spices and precious woods that give it a couture bearing. Patchouli is no longer a hippie wood but an aristocrat’s wood, rich, sensual and readily talkative.
The spicy opening of cinnamon and ginger awakens the patchouli and gives it bite; the heart settles the material itself, supported by Mysore sandalwood that rounds off its edge; the base of amber and musk lays down an animalic warmth, in the pure spirit of chypre. The composition moves like a hushed conspiracy, complex and enveloping.
The name states this intrigue: a conspiracy of patchouli and sandalwood, the better to disturb the senses. In 2007 Pierre Guillaume returned to theme 8 with L’Ombre Fauve, variation 8.1, which pushes patchouli toward animalic amber and fur, proof that Intrigant Patchouli remains the origin from which the house thinks its “Patch-work”.
Olfactory pyramid
Pierre Guillaume does not publish a formal pyramid: the layout below follows the progression described in the catalogue, from bright spices to animalic base.
The thread is patchouli, held by the spices and the sandalwood to give it the bearing of a couture chypre.
Olfactory profile
Intrigant Patchouli is an ennobled patchouli rather than an earthy one. The perfumer erases the attic side with spices and Mysore sandalwood, so that the material reads like an elegant chypre. It is a patchouli of character, rich and sensual, far from raw, bohemian patchoulis.
Its signature lies in this aristocratic rereading of the material: cinnamon and ginger animate it, sandalwood rounds it, amber and musk give it an enveloping warmth. The trail is present and talkative, which makes it an assertive patchouli, unisex, to be worn in the evening or in mid-season.

When and where to wear
Intrigant Patchouli is a chypre of character, at its best in mid-season and cool weather, when the spices and amber unfold their warmth. Its richness makes it a scent of evening and personality, more dressed than an everyday patchouli.
