History
Mécanique du Désir grows from a childhood memory. A collector of vintage vehicles, the perfumer’s father introduced him as a teenager to the beauty of fine engines, while he helped restore his Austin Healeys, Jaguars and Mercedes. The long winter Sundays in the workshop, hands sunk into the entrails of these sculptures on wheels, left Pierre Guillaume with a stubborn smell: that of engine grease, the oil blackened by the rubbing of a machine’s parts.
That smell always exerted on him a pull of attraction and repulsion. Tied to happy moments, this engine sweat with its reek of tar, hydrocarbons and oil nonetheless unsettled him at times. It was on reading Jacques Lacarrière, in Ce bel et vivace aujourd’hui, that he sensed the hidden poetry of this black mucus and decided to make it a working theme. The title, the mechanics of desire, names the ambivalence of a material at once repellent and desirable.
The composition translates the idea material by material. Guaiac wood and violet leaves give the strange darkness of engine grease; amber and animalic musks bring its warmth; the sulphurous notes of the blackcurrant bud, blended with aldehydes, draw the metallic contours, to which mandarin essence gives the glint of chrome. Launched in 2018, Mécanique du Désir is a contemporary woody amber, dark and luminous at once, that owns its industrial side.
Olfactory pyramid
Mécanique du Désir reads from the metallic chrome of the top to the greasy warmth of amber and musk.
The thread is the engine grease: a woody that keeps a metallic, greasy note from start to finish.
Olfactory profile
Mécanique du Désir is a woody amber with metallic glints, more singular than comfortable. Aldehydes and the sulphurous blackcurrant bud open on a cold, mineral freshness, like a metal surface, which mandarin makes shine with a chrome glint. Violet, treated black, brings the greasy, earthy note that suggests oil and rubber.
The base tips the scent toward warmth. Smoky guaiac wood, amber and animalic musks set up a greasy, enveloping material, dark and sensual at once. It is a fragrance of character that turns an industrial smell into a desirable trail. It speaks to those who love atypical woody ambers, far from the usual accords.
My engine grease would have the warmth of amber and animalic musks, tinted by the strange darkness of an accord of guaiac wood and violet leaves.Pierre Guillaume, perfumer
