Northern Love

Northern Love reaches the catalog in September 2026 with a note list of exactly three items: a spice accord, vanilla and sandalwood. Bruno Jovanovic wrote it, and the house prints his name on the bottle as it has done for every release since 2000.

History

On 21 August 2026 Northern Love holds the hero slot on the official UK and European homepages of Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, while the US catalog does not list it yet. That gap between territories matches the stated release month, September 2026, and it is the clearest public marker of where the launch stands.

The house runs on a single rule set in 2000: Frédéric Malle commissions formulas, he does not write them. The perfumer is named on the back of the bottle, a reversal of the couture licensing model in which authors stay invisible. Estée Lauder Companies bought the house in 2014 and the rule survived intact. Northern Love is therefore credited outright to Bruno Jovanovic, already among the catalog's signatories.

What the release adds is a register the house had barely used. Its reputation rests on very concentrated florals and on a handful of musky ambers, not on warm spice laid over creamy wood. Only three materials appear on the official pages, a spice accord, vanilla and sandalwood, and that brevity is itself informative: the perfume works a simple contrast rather than a stack of notes.

Olfactory pyramid

The house publishes no pyramid for Northern Love: it names three materials, while the trade press lists more.

Materials named by the house
Spice accorddry warmth
Vanillarounding binder
Sandalwoodcreamy wood
Detail reported by the press
Saffronleathery, metallic
Jasminesolar floral
Cinnamonburning spice
Creamy sandalwoodmilky wood
Vanillaambered sweetness
Amberwarm resin

Both lists describe the same thing at two resolutions: a dry spice, saffron and cinnamon, set over milky wood and ambered vanilla.

Olfactory profile

In the press reading, the spice accord the house declines to unpack resolves into saffron and cinnamon. The two pull in opposite directions: saffron toward leather and metal, cinnamon toward sugar and hot wood. Stacked, they produce a warmth that is neither gourmand nor strictly aromatic, and that tension is the most interesting thing on the announced list.

Vanilla, the second named material, is not doing dessert work here. Backed by amber it thickens rather than softens, and it bridges the spice and the wood. Jasmine, which appears only in the press list, supplies the one floral lift in an otherwise dry and hot structure.

Sandalwood is the third official material and the only one both lists handle identically. The press specifies creamy, which points to a milky rather than a dry reading of the wood. Northern Love is not proposing a structural surprise; it works a familiar register with materials this house habitually doses without restraint.

Common questions

Who composed Northern Love?01
Bruno Jovanovic. The attribution appears on the house's own pages, which credit every perfumer by name.
When does Northern Love come out?02
September 2026. As of 21 August 2026 it is featured on the official UK and European homepages but is not yet listed in the US catalog.
What notes does the house announce?03
Three: a spice accord, vanilla and sandalwood. The longer list, saffron, jasmine, cinnamon, creamy sandalwood, vanilla and amber, comes from the trade press and not from Frédéric Malle.
What concentration and sizes exist?04
Eau de parfum, in 10, 50 and 100 milliliters.
What does perfume publisher mean at Frédéric Malle?05
Frédéric Malle signs no formula himself. He commissions the composition from a named perfumer, accompanies it without rewriting it, and puts that name on the back of the bottle. Northern Love carries Bruno Jovanovic's.
Does it resemble the other ambers in the catalog?06
It shares warmth and density with Musc Ravageur, but reaches them through spice and creamy wood where Musc Ravageur goes through musk. The catalog had no spiced amber of this kind.
