History

In MEMENTO, Filippo Sorcinelli restores through smell the drawers of sacristies he has known as an organist. Pont.Max. is the sacristy of St Peter's Basilica, in the Vatican, the heart of Catholic Rome.

The title abbreviates Pontifex Maximus, the Supreme Pontiff: literally the one who builds bridges, the highest priestly office traced back to the most ancient era of Rome and assumed by the Pope, bishop of Rome, from the fifth century. The perfume evokes an almost institutional smell, the one that symbolically recalls the whole set of Roman rites, handed down by the Church of Rome and spread into every corner of the world.

Sorcinelli states it as a harmonic evolution. The subject sets the gravity through myrrh, benzoin, resin incense and amber: a dense resinous mass, warm and smoky. The counter-subject opens a breach with marine notes and jasmine, a breath of air in the nave. The tail rests on a single material, Virginia cedar, which dries the incense and keeps it from weighing.

The house releases it as an extrait de parfum, unisex, in the line of the MEMENTO collection presented in 2024. It is the most austere incense of the set, a fragrance of ceremony more than of seduction, cut for solemnity.

Harmonic evolution

Filippo Sorcinelli is an organist; he does not conceive his perfumes as a pyramid of volatility but as a score. Pont.Max. is therefore stated in three movements, subject, counter-subject and tail, exactly as the house publishes them.

Subject
Myrrhbitter resin
Benzoinvanillic balm
Resin incensedense smoke
Amberwarm resin
Counter-subject
Marine notesopen air
Jasminewarm floral
Tail
Virginia cedardry wood

The through-line is resin: myrrh, benzoin and incense hold the smoky mass, the marine notes and jasmine air it out, and the closing cedar dries it to give it its ceremonial hold.

Olfactory profile

Pont.Max. opens on a resinous, grave mass: myrrh brings its balsamic bitterness, benzoin its vanillic softness, resin incense its dense smoke and amber its warmth. It is a frontal incense, without detour, setting a nave-like solemnity from the first breath.

The heart makes room for a breath: a marine note opens the space, like a cold draught beneath a vault, and a warm jasmine briefly contradicts the severity of the resin. This breach is what sets Pont.Max. apart from a purely liturgical incense: it keeps a share of air and flower.

The tail closes on Virginia cedar alone, dry and upright, which structures the whole and gives it its hold. Longevity is that of an extrait, long and close to the skin; the sillage stays dignified and measured, at the scale of a rite rather than a crowd.

“An almost institutional smell, one that symbolically recalls the whole set of Roman rites.”Filippo Sorcinelli, official note for Pont.Max.
