Velvet Violet

Velvet Violet takes violet against type: less the powdery flower than the green leaf, stretched toward the toasted grain of sesame. Gaël Montero makes it a composition suspended between light and shade, true to the dualities the Dries Van Noten house loves.

History

Velvet Violet extends the fragrance catalog that Dries Van Noten opened in 2022, ten unisex creations built on dualities and offered in refillable bottles. The Belgian designer, known for his play of prints and materials, translates his taste for contrast into scent here.

Gaël Montero treats violet through its leaf rather than its flower: green, fresh, almost garden-like, it moves away from the expected powdery violet. Against it, toasted sesame and barley bring a roasted, warm, nutty material that gives the scent its velvet grain.

The base of tonka bean and vetiver, lifted by clary sage and benzoin, closes on a woody, gourmand softness. Velvet Violet plays across the whole tension between the cold green of the flower and the warm roast of the grain.

From green leaf to roasted grain, Velvet Violet holds its line: a violet suspended between cold and warm.

Olfactory profile

Velvet Violet opens green and bright: the violet is leaf before it is flower, and pink pepper adds a spark. This is far from a violet candy, closer to a freshly snapped stem.

The heart tips into the roast. Toasted sesame and barley give a warm, nutty, faintly milky material that wraps the violet in a velvet veil. Clary sage slides an ambery, herbal facet through it.

The base rounds without weighing down: almondy tonka bean, smoky vetiver and soft benzoin hold a woody gourmand foundation. Longevity is good, the sillage silky. A unisex woody floral for the shoulder seasons, as right by day as by night.

"I wanted to create an incandescent violet, suspended between light and darkness, where the ethereal, powdery breath of the flower reveals the burning intensity of toasted sesame."Gaël Montero, perfumer
