Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum is the concentrated version of the composition signed by Francis Kurkdjian, launched in 2017 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. It extends the story started in 2014 with the commission from the Baccarat crystal works for its 250th anniversary, then the standalone eau de parfum released in 2015. The stated aim from the house is straightforward: push the radiance and the warmth of the original accord further, without betraying the inspiration.
2017 is a pivotal year for the Paris house. In March, LVMH announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Maison Francis Kurkdjian, cofounded in Paris, France in 2009 by Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya. The alignment with LVMH coincides with the launch of the Extrait, a strong commercial signal: the house expands its catalog around its most visible composition and starts the international scaling that follows in the coming years.
The Extrait does not replace the eau de parfum, it completes it. Where the eau de parfum targets a radiant projection, the Extrait works on depth, base warmth and persistence. An annual limited edition has enriched the collection since 2021, but the Extrait remains the permanent denser reference.
Fragrance notes
The Extrait pyramid takes the restrained writing of the eau de parfum and extends it through a more carnal floral heart and a more animalic amber base. Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes the composition as an intensification of the three auras of the eau de parfum: floral, woody and amber. Three additions distinguish the Extrait: bitter almond at the top, Egyptian jasmine at the heart, ambergris and cashmeran at the base.
The top phase holds for 15 to 30 minutes: leathered saffron, sweet bitter almond, solar jasmine grandiflorum. The heart then settles and carries the perfume for 2 to 4 hours, led by the indolic Egyptian jasmine and Virginia cedar. The base takes over between 5 and 24 hours and beyond, built around ambergris, cashmeran and ambroxan, with a drydown denser and more animalic than the one of the eau de parfum.
Scent profile
The olfactory profile of the Extrait carries the radiant signature of the eau de parfum and adds a warm and slightly animalic dimension. Bitter almond rounds out the opening, Egyptian jasmine thickens the heart, and ambergris opens a more carnal register at the base than the fir resin of the original version. The central signature remains recognizable from the first spray, yet it is carried by a warmer base that shifts the overall balance on skin.
The construction stays linear, opposite to classic top-heart-base pyramids. The cardinal accord asserts itself from the spray and holds that line through nearly the whole wear. The difference with the eau de parfum plays out in the texture: the Extrait is denser, creamier and more enveloping, where the eau de parfum is more airy and more radiant. The added density comes from the cashmeran-ambergris pairing that extends the base, without bringing sugar or gourmand facets into the central accord.
The resulting character is signature and inward. Signature, because the reading remains that of Baccarat Rouge 540, recognizable to anyone familiar with the original. Inward, because projection in the first hours sits closer to the skin, which makes the Extrait easier to wear in quiet interiors and discreet in close company.
