A direct, precise iris shaded by a stormy accord of pepper and peony. Fig tree honey and Jinkho wood on top, a dark iris and leather at the heart, Haitian vetiver in the base. A sober elegance, like a well-cut suit.

History

Costume Liquide carries number 14.2 in Pierre Guillaume’s numbered collection, the one he first named Parfumerie Générale. Theme 14, “Iris,” gathers the compositions where iris root takes the lead. This is the house’s third work on that material: after Iris Oriental, a balmy iris, and Cuir d’Iris 14.1, a leathered iris created in 2007 that became a house classic, Costume Liquide 14.2, in 2023, offers a peppery rereading of it.

The project’s internal code name states the intent: “Iris Super-Ombré.” The whole perfume rests on that idea of shading. The iris isn’t laid bare: it is, the press kit says, literally shaded by a “stormy” accord of pepper and peony. Pepper brings the bite, peony the floral tension; together they cast a dense shadow over the iris root, an enveloping preciousness that distills a sober elegance rather than a showy opulence.

The title, for its part, runs a tailoring metaphor. Costume Liquide is designed, the house writes, to bring the confidence, rightness and elegance of a tailored suit. The iris is the cloth here; pepper and peony are its cut. To open the accord, the perfumer calls on a soft, ambery fig tree honey and a resinous Jinkho wood; at the heart, cardamom freshens a dark “old black iris,” with facets of grape and chocolate, doubled by a tanned leather facet.

The base seeks the natural and the lasting. Basil and violet leaves bring freshness and positivity, balancing the density of the peppery accord, before a superb quality of Haitian vetiver lays the foundation. That vetiver, smoky and rooty, gives the perfume its timeless classic finish: a stable base signature that anchors the iris without weighing it down. Released in 2023, Costume Liquide 14.2 thus closes the house’s iris triptych on its most structured version.

Olfactory pyramid

The house unfolds its iris theme in three movements, from fig tree honey to vetiver root, by way of the peppery shadow at the heart. Here is the pyramid as the press kit gives it.

The thread is iris, declined from light to dark: powdery on top, deep at the heart, peppery in the base, where Haitian vetiver gives it its stability.

Olfactory profile

Costume Liquide is a peppery iris, dark and structured, the opposite of the powdery, light irises of tradition. The iris is treated as a cloth to be shaded: pepper and peony cast a stormy, dense shadow over it, making it an iris of shadow rather than light. Fig tree honey and Jinkho wood open it gently, cardamom freshens it, leather tightens it, and Haitian vetiver anchors it in a smoky, rooty base.

It is a perfume of sober elegance, worn close to the skin and favouring rightness over projection. The sillage is measured, the longevity solid thanks to the vetiver base. An iris for those who love this material in its gravest, most peppery form, far from the cosmetic.
