For American niche buyers used to thinking of neroli as a sunlit Mediterranean cologne signature (think Atelier Cologne's Néroli Bergamote or Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino), Neroli Outrenoir landed in 2016 as a deliberate provocation. The black-lacquered Guerlain bottle on the Bergdorf Goodman counter signaled the intent before the cap even came off.

The fragrance is a four-hand composition signed by Thierry Wasser, Guerlain's house perfumer since 2008, working with Delphine Jelk, the maison's creative director. It belongs to the haute-perfumery line L'Art et la Matière, opened by Guerlain in 2005 around single-material studies.

The pictorial reference is explicit. Outrenoir is the term French painter Pierre Soulages coined around 1979 for his black monochromes, in which light reflected off grooves and reliefs gives presence to a fully black canvas. Wasser and Jelk borrowed the principle: instead of letting neroli burst in the open sun, they buried it inside a smoky tea accord that captures and returns its light.

The architecture pairs two opposite poles. A bright hesperidic cocktail (bergamot, petitgrain, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit) wraps the white neroli signature on top. Underneath, a smoky black tea accord with earthy facets sets the dark register, then a base of vanilla, myrrh, oakmoss, benzoin and ambrette holds the dry-down. Jelk has called the signature a play between innocence and mystery, white against black.

The bottle itself reinforces the program. It is the square L'Art et la Matière flask, redrawn from the 1870 Guerlain Square Bottle and produced by historic glassmaker Pochet du Courval, finished here in black lacquer. American distribution runs through guerlain.com, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. Luckyscent carries discovery decants. In 2024 Guerlain released a reorchestrated edition, with a hair mist following in 2025, while keeping the 2016 formula in catalog.

On skin, the smoky tea functions as the worked blackness, and the neroli flashes off it like reflected silver.
