History
Tolu is composed by Ormonde Jayne, the independent British house founded in 2001 in London (United Kingdom) by Linda Pilkington, whose perfumes are handmade in England.
Tolu is a South American resin that takes its name from the Colombian port of Tolú. It is a perfume treasure: an opulent velvety formulation with pure Tolu resin that takes the wearer on a sensual amberesque journey. Laced with golden frankincense and amber, the scent's core is enveloped with a heady mix of orange blossom and clary sage.
Juniper berry, orange blossom and clary sage open the structure. Orchid, Egyptian geranium and muguet form the heart, while Tolu, tonka bean, golden frankincense and amber close it. The house notes that Tolu was the first fine fragrance to star Tolu resin as the main ingredient, where in the past it was used only in minute quantities. Tolu is an Eau de Parfum at maximum strength in the 88 ml format.

The olfactory architecture of Tolu runs in three tiers: Head, Heart and Soul. The summary notes are Tolu, Moroccan rose, orange blossom, tonka bean and golden frankincense.
Scent profile
The signature of Tolu is its velvety amberesque warmth. Tolu resin, here promoted from a trace material to the star of the composition, is set among frankincense and amber to create a soft, opulent register likened to enjoying a fine cognac by a roaring fire. Its profile reads opulent, velvety and sensual.
The opening is fresh and herbal, with juniper, orange blossom and clary sage. The heart adds floral roundness through orchid, geranium and muguet. The drydown is the heart of the matter: Tolu, tonka, frankincense and amber give a warm, resinous, velvety finish that lingers close to the skin.

I have always favoured this style of perfume, like enjoying a fine cognac by a roaring log fire. Soft amberesque notes are highly appealing and Tolu was the first fine fragrance to star Tolu resin as the main ingredient.
