Story

Fougère, the cornerstone of masculine perfumery, dates back to 1882, when Houbigant released Fougère Royale around lavender, geranium, moss and coumarin. Fougère Bengale, released in 2007, per the press kit issued by the house, by Parfum d’Empire, takes that classic chord on a detour through India, soaked in Assam tea, hot hay and blond tobacco, as if a fougère had been carried by boat to Calcutta. Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, a chemist who founded the house, signed the composition.

Fougère Bengale reworks the fougère accord into an untamed creature with animal sensuality and an Indian savannah feel. It sits inside Corticchiato’s long-running narrative method: pick a story, find the natural materials that carry it, and build the perfume backbone before anything else gets fine-tuned.

Structurally, Fougère Bengale opens on lavender, lays over a heart of Assam tea, hay, honey, blond tobacco, then settles into a drydown of patchouli, tonka bean, oakmoss, vanilla. The brand insists on sourcing its own naturals where it can, and has run an essential-oil production unit in Madagascar for years to back that claim.

The fragrance ships in the house’s familiar 50 ml and 100 ml flacons cast by Pochet du Courval and engraved with the laurel-crown signature.

Olfactory pyramid

Fougère Bengale maps cleanly to the classic top-heart-base reading: a brisk citrus and aromatic top, a structured heart that does the storytelling, and a long-throw drydown that holds the throw past the four-hour mark.

Olfactory profile

Fougère Bengale reads as a oriental fougère in the Parfum d’Empire idiom: a single backbone accord built clean, with the natural materials doing the work rather than a packaging gimmick. Fougère Bengale reworks the fougère accord into an untamed creature with animal sensuality and an Indian savannah feel.

The cult favorite quality here for US niche wearers is the way honey, blond tobacco stays in focus instead of getting buried under the base. That holds true across the line, and it’s the reason Now Smell This and Persolaise keep recommending Parfum d’Empire as a gateway into serious narrative niche.

When and where to wear

Fougère Bengale takes the barbershop fougère and soaks it in honey, hay and blond tobacco, a far denser reading than the classic. That sweetness and the tonka-and-oakmoss floor make it an evening companion for the colder months, worn close rather than broadcast across a summer terrace.

Wear references

Temperatures
Suited to crisp, cold air, roughly 38 °F to 58 °F (3 °C to 14 °C); heat turns the honey cloying.
Moment
Evening and after dark, well into the night.
Contexts
Cold-weather dinners, a quiet bar, an evening at home.
Dosage
One or two sprays; the honeyed tobacco is emphatic and grows on the skin.
