History of the house
The Maria Candida Gentile house was founded in 2009 in Sarzana, in Liguria (Italy), by the Italian perfumer of the same name. Maria Candida Gentile launched three opening compositions the same year, all signed by her: Sideris, Cinabre and Exultat. The writing was set from the start: a high naturals content, a Mediterranean anchor and openly stated literary and musical references (mariacandidagentile.com About page, Fragrantica designer page, Parfumo brand page, accessed 2026-05-31).
Before signing her own brand, Maria Candida Gentile trained in composition at the Institut Superieur de Parfumerie de Grasse (France), where she is documented as the first Italian woman to have studied. She was later granted the title of Maitre Parfumeur. For several years she composed bespoke perfumes for private clients and for several Italian hotels, before structuring her own signed collection (mariacandidagentile.com About, Fragrantica brand presentation, CaFleureBon interview, accessed 2026-05-31).
The atelier is based on the Monte d'Armolo heights, in Sarzana (Liguria, Italy). The property includes a former church dedicated to the Virgin, converted into a showroom and a display space for the collection. The perfumer composes, samples, welcomes visitors by appointment and keeps the olfactive archives of the house there (mariacandidagentile.com Atelier page, Fragrantica news brand presentation).
After the 2009 opening trio, the collection has expanded steadily. Burlesque was released in 2012, followed by Barry Lyndon, Hanbury, Finisterre, Lankaran, Noir Tropical, Luberon, Gershwin, Rrose Selavy, Leuco and the eponymous perfume Gentile. The names draw on literature (Cesare Pavese for Leuco), painting (Marcel Duchamp for Rrose Selavy), cinema (Stanley Kubrick for Barry Lyndon) and precise places around the Mediterranean basin (Fragrantica designer page, Parfumo brand page, CaFleureBon interview).
The house claims a prevailing use of natural materials in its compositions, with a share of essential oils and absolutes reported between 80 and 98 percent depending on the formula. It remains independent, run by its founder, and distributes the collection from the Sarzana atelier and through a selective network of independent perfumeries in Europe and abroad (mariacandidagentile.com, Fragrantica brand presentation, Parfumo brand page).
Notable perfumes
The Maria Candida Gentile collection was built around the 2009 opening trio and then extended with about a dozen compositions identifiable with the perfumer, all signed by her. Listed below are the most emblematic compositions of the house.
| Year | Perfume | Concentration | Olfactive family |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2009 | Sideris | Eau de parfum | Incense floral woody |
| 2009 | Cinabre | Eau de parfum | Floral oriental |
| 2009 | Exultat | Eau de parfum | Aromatic woody |
| 2012 | Burlesque | Eau de parfum | Floral oriental |
| 2013 | Barry Lyndon | Eau de parfum | Leather oriental |
| 2013 | Hanbury | Eau de parfum | Mediterranean green floral |
| 2014 | Finisterre | Eau de parfum | Marine aromatic |
| 2014 | Lankaran | Eau de parfum | Spicy oriental |
Sideris, Cinabre and Exultat (2009) opened the collection with an incense floral woody, a floral oriental and an aromatic woody composition that immediately set the Mediterranean signature of the house. Burlesque (2012) developed the oriental axis around a sensual floral. Barry Lyndon (2013), named after the Stanley Kubrick film, gave the house a leather oriental anchored in 18th-century European writing. Hanbury (2013) drew its name from the Hanbury botanical gardens on the Italian Riviera and offered a Mediterranean green floral. Finisterre (2014) opened a marine aromatic axis on a windswept coast theme. Lankaran (2014), named after a town in Azerbaijan known for its tea gardens, settled a spicy oriental at the heart of the catalogue.
Olfactive signature
Maria Candida Gentile writes an Italian author-driven perfumery, marked by a high naturals content and a precise thematic repertoire. The compositions of the house combine Mediterranean citrus, incense, resins, Ligurian flowers, leathers, spices and woods, in proportions where essential oils and absolutes hold a reported share between 80 and 98 percent (mariacandidagentile.com, Fragrantica designer page, CaFleureBon interview, accessed 2026-05-31).
The house claims a writing approach inspired by literature (Cesare Pavese for Leuco), painting (Marcel Duchamp for Rrose Selavy), cinema (Stanley Kubrick for Barry Lyndon) and Mediterranean geography (Hanbury, Luberon, Lankaran, Finisterre). This editorial stance brings the collection closer to author work than to a typical olfactive-family catalogue.
The house writes an Italian author-driven perfumery, rich in naturals, anchored in Sarzana and fed by literature, music and Mediterranean landscapes.
