How to choose your first niche fragrance

Quick answer

  • If you like quiet fragrances: Molecule 01, Another 13 or Santal 33.
  • If you like freshness: Gypsy Water or Philosykos.
  • If you like florals and fruity notes: Delina, Hacivat or Aventus.
  • If you like warm fragrances: Baccarat Rouge 540, Layton or Grand Soir.
  • Before you buy: a sample worn for a full day, never a blind buy.

The right first niche fragrance is not the rarest one. It is the one you want to wear every day, and the one that tells you something about your own taste. For a definition of the genre, see what is a niche perfume.

The selection keeps the names that come up most often in beginner recommendation lists. It sorts them into four styles, from skin scents to ambers, and each fragrance shows a different side of its style. Our guide to fragrance families explained covers each family in turn.

None of these should be a blind buy. A fragrance keeps changing on skin for six to eight hours, and its base is what decides whether it suits you. The full method is in how to start a niche perfume collection.

The 17 fragrances, by style

Skin scents and musks

Fragrances that sit close to the skin and work anywhere. They teach you to smell a single material and to judge longevity.

Molecule 01

Escentric Molecules · 2006 · Geza Schoen Style: woody musk, a single molecule

Molecule 01 contains one material only, Iso E Super, from top to base. It smells of velvety wood and blends into the skin. It is the best way to learn what a molecule found in hundreds of fragrances actually does.

Not a Perfume

Juliette Has a Gun · 2010 · Romano Ricci Style: mineral amber, a single molecule

Not a Perfume rests on Cetalox alone, a synthetic ambroxide. The result is clean, mineral and very quiet. It is the one to choose if you want a skin scent with no floral effect at all.

Another 13

Le Labo · 2010 · Nathalie Lorson Style: ambery musk

Le Labo created Another 13 in 2010 for AnOther Magazine, on an idea from Colette, before adding it to its permanent collection. The house describes it around ambroxide, jasmine and moss. It takes the Molecule 01 idea towards a warmer musk.

Santal 33

Le Labo · 2011 · Frank Voelkl Style: sandalwood woody

Santal 33 puts Australian sandalwood and papyrus at the heart, under an iris-tinged cardamom, over soft leather and white musk. It is the reference for the modern skin-close woody. It shows what sandalwood brings to a fragrance without weighing it down.

Fresh and green

Daytime fragrances, bright and easy, that open niche perfumery through freshness rather than power.

Gypsy Water

Byredo · 2008 · Jérôme Epinette Style: fresh woody

Bergamot, juniper and pepper open Gypsy Water, followed by a heart of incense, iris and pine needles. The base stays soft, with sandalwood, amber and vanilla. It is an easy woody for anyone who already wears fresh colognes.

Philosykos

Diptyque · 1996 · Olivia Giacobetti Style: green fig

Philosykos renders the whole fig tree: leaf, milky sap and wood. Black pepper gives it lift and white cedar closes it. It is the oldest fragrance on this list, and one of the references for green notes in niche perfumery.

Bal d’Afrique

Byredo · 2009 · Jérôme Epinette Style: citrus floral

African marigold, buchu and blackcurrant give Bal d’Afrique a sunny opening. The heart turns to violet and jasmine, the base to cedar, vetiver and tonka bean. It bridges the fresh styles and the florals.

Fruity, chypre and floral

Fragrances with a strong personality, often named as a first love. They teach you to recognise a chypre and a modern floral.

Aventus

Creed · 2010 · Olivier and Erwin Creed Style: smoky fruity woody

Aventus sets a bright pineapple over bergamot and blackcurrant, then a base of smoky birch, patchouli and oakmoss. Many houses have since tried to approach this fruity woody. It is the benchmark against which the whole style is compared.

Hacivat

Nishane · 2017 · Jorge Lee Style: fruity chypre

Nishane describes Hacivat as an eau chypre: bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit on top, jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood at the heart, oakmoss and dry woods in the base. The name comes from a character of Turkish shadow theatre. It is a bright, modern chypre, easier to wear than a classic one.

Delina

Parfums de Marly · 2017 · Quentin Bisch Style: fruity floral

Delina places a Damask rose and nutmeg under a lychee and rhubarb opening, over cashmeran, musks and vetiver. It is the niche fruity floral most often recommended to beginners. It shows how a rose can feel fresh and current.

Portrait of a Lady

Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle · 2010 · Dominique Ropion Style: floral chypre, rose and patchouli

Portrait of a Lady pairs a massive Turkish rose, cinnamon and clove with a base of patchouli, incense and sandalwood. It is the most intense floral on the list. It is the right pick once you already know you like fragrances that get noticed.

Spicy, amber and gourmand

Warm fragrances for evenings and winter. They are also the most frequent names in recommendation lists.

Layton

Parfums de Marly · 2016 · Hamid Merati-Kashani Style: spicy woody

Layton opens on green apple, bergamot and cardamom, moves through jasmine, lavender and violet, then settles on vanilla, sandalwood and guaiac wood. It is a rounded, approachable spicy woody. It suits anyone coming from designer fragrances.

Baccarat Rouge 540

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2016 · Francis Kurkdjian Style: woody floral amber

First composed in 2014 for the 250th anniversary of the crystal maker Baccarat, it went on sale at Maison Francis Kurkdjian in January 2016. Ambroxan forms its frame, between a jasmine-tinged saffron and a sugary base, with cedar as a dry counterpoint. It is the most frequently named fragrance across beginner lists.

Grand Soir

Maison Francis Kurkdjian · 2016 · Francis Kurkdjian Style: soft amber

Grand Soir opens on labdanum, lavandin and cinnamon leaf, then settles on honeyed benzoin and a vanilla amber base. It is a classic, warm and legible amber. It teaches the amber family without detours.

Naxos

Xerjoff · 2015 · Chris Maurice Style: honeyed tobacco

Naxos belongs to Xerjoff’s 1861 collection, a tribute to Sicily. The house lists lemon, bergamot, lavender and incense on top, jasmine, honey and cinnamon at the heart, vanilla, tobacco leaf and tonka bean in the base. It is a soft, gourmand tobacco, much loved in winter.

Side Effect

Initio Parfums Privés · 2016 · not disclosed by the house Style: tobacco amber

Side Effect puts sweet tobacco and sandalwood at the heart, opened by saffron and a cinnamon rum, closed by vanilla. It is loud and long-lasting. Keep it for evenings, once you know how to dose.

Guidance

Amouage · 2023 · Quentin Bisch Style: floral amber

Amouage presents Guidance as a new reading of its rose, frankincense and ambergris triad. The house lists pear, frankincense and hazelnut on top, saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus at the heart, cistus, sandalwood and vanilla in the base. The newest bottle here, it won Best Niche Fragrance at the 2024 French Fragrance Foundation Awards, according to the house.

How to try them without mistakes

Start with three samples in three different styles, for example a skin scent, a fresh one and an amber. Wear each for a full day, on skin rather than on a paper strip. Note what is left in the evening: the base tells you whether the fragrance suits you. The bottle comes later, when you miss a fragrance on the days you are not wearing it. The decants and discovery sets offered by most of these houses exist for exactly this step.

Frequently asked questions

Which niche fragrance should a beginner try first?

Start from the style you already wear. If you like quiet fragrances, try Molecule 01, Another 13 or Santal 33. If you like warm ones, Baccarat Rouge 540, Layton or Grand Soir. If you like freshness, Gypsy Water or Philosykos.

Should I blind buy a niche fragrance?

No. A fragrance changes on skin for six to eight hours, and the same bottle smells different from one person to the next. Try a sample or a decant for a full day before buying the bottle.

How many fragrances does a first collection need?

Three are enough to begin, as long as they are in different styles. A skin scent for every day, a fresh one for summer and an amber for evenings already cover most occasions.

Which niche fragrances are unisex?

Most fragrances on this list are presented as unisex by their house, including Santal 33, Another 13, Gypsy Water, Philosykos and Baccarat Rouge 540. Aventus is presented as masculine, Delina and Portrait of a Lady as feminine.

Which niche fragrance works for the office?

The skin scents in the first part work best: Molecule 01, Not a Perfume, Another 13 and Santal 33. Philosykos and Gypsy Water also work. Keep ambers such as Side Effect for the evening.

Why do these fragrances appear on every list?

They are stable references, easy to find as samples, and each one clearly stands for a style. Knowing them gives you a benchmark against which to compare any new fragrance.
